Nikwax Down Proof - 300ml
$18.95 CAD
-
Nikwax Down Proof™ has been specifically designed and optimized for down filled gear. It adds Durable Water Repellency (DWR), which protects against rain and condensation, improving the natural insulating properties of down.
Nikwax Down Proof™ prolongs the effective life of your down gear. It leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual down filaments and fabric fibers allowing moisture vapor to pass through, maintaining breathability and optimizing performance in cold and damp conditions.
Nikwax Down Proof™ is a safe, easy to use product for down filled gear. It is quick to apply in a washing machine and ensures that the treatment goes right through the item, treating both the outer fabric and the down fill. The DWR of Nikwax Down Proof™ develops on air drying. However, tumble drying is recommended to ensure that the down is dried thoroughly and as quickly as possible. Leaving down wet or damp can ruin it completely.
Nikwax takes great care to minimize the effect of Nikwax products on the environment and on you, the consumer. Nikwax waterproofing products are WaterBased, non-aerosol, non-flammable, non-hazardous and environmentally friendly. They contain no harmful solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and are completely free of fluorocarbons (which have been shown to be persistent in the environment and have been associated with serious health issues).
-
Machine wash (Front-loading) :
For best results remove all non-washable parts and clean item(s) first with Nikwax Down Wash™ in a separate wash cycle. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions (large items can be treated by hand).
- Remove all detergent build up from the detergent dispenser.
- Place clean item in washing machine (maximum 1 item).
- Use 150ml for 1 item.
- Run 30°C synthetic cycle and slow spin.
- After the cycle has finished run multiple spin cycles, each time incrementally increasing the spin speed, to remove excess water.
To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Down Wash™. Do not use detergents.
*Use a front-loading washing machine only. For sleeping bags, use a commercial machine.
Hand Wash:
For best results always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Down Wash™. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions.
- Immerse clean item(s) in hand-hot water.
- For clothing: Use 150ml for 1 item in a bowl or 300ml for 2 items in a bath. Fully submerge item(s) in water.
- For sleeping bags*: Use 300ml in 4cm deep water in a bath.
- Agitate to mix, leave to soak for 5-10 minutes, then agitate thoroughly.
- Rinse clothing in cold water until water runs clear. For sleeping bags repeat rinsing process, drain and gently press bag to expel water.
- To remove excess water transfer item(s) to a washing machine and run multiple spin cycles, each time incrementally increasing the spin speed.
To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Down Wash™. Do not use detergents.
Make Sure to thoroughly dry your down filled gear:
To get the maximum amount of water out of your down it’s best to spin dry multiple times, each time incrementally increasing the speed of the spin cycle. Wet down is heavy, so if items are spun too quickly while still holding a large amount of water it is possible that internal baffles may be broken.
Nikwax Down Proof™ treated items need no heat to develop water repellency. However, tumble drying is recommended (if care label allows) to ensure that the down is dried thoroughly and as quickly as possible. Leaving down wet or damp can ruin it completely. Tumble dry according to manufacturer’s instructions on a low setting until clumps have disappeared. Ensure that there is sufficient room in the tumble drier to house the item once dry, as items will return to their original size during the drying process.
Teasing apart clumps repeatedly during drying process will help restore loft to the down.
After tumble drying it is recommended to air item(s) for at least a day in a warm and dry space, prior to packing away.

Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In is the market leader. It is easy and quick to apply in a washing machine, and its highly Durable Water Repellency (DWR) develops on air drying. The washing machine application ensures that the treatment goes right through the garment, treating seams, tapes and cords, as well as the fabric. Also, as the need for tumble drying is removed, this saves energy and protects more vulnerable, older, garments from heat. Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In has been specifically designed and optimized for breathable waterproof garments; it leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibers allowing moisture vapour to pass through, maintaining breathability. - Use Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In in a washing machine.
For best results remove all non-washable parts and always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash® in a separate wash cycle. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing.
Top Loading Machine Wash:
- 1. Place maximum of 3 clean garments in washing machine.
- 2. After the machine has filled add 10floz/300ml of TX.Direct®.
- 3. Set cycle to Heavy and Warm, Low water level.
Front Loading Machine Wash:
- 1. Remove all detergent build-up from the detergent dispenser.
- 2. Place maximum of 2 clean garments in washing machine.
- 3. Use 3floz/100ml per garment.
- 4. Run 30oC Synthetic cycle and slow spin.
Do not machine-wash garments if taped seams have become dislodged.*
To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash®. Do not use detergents.
*Faulty taped seams sometimes become detached on old or worn garments. They can be re-stuck using a proprietary clear glue after waterproofing and drying.
